ABOUT THE PROJECT
These series were created for a wedding videographer Michael Matizhenko who is inspired by Kodak aesthetics and Wes Anderson films (and love, of course!). The illustrations are based on the stills from love-story genre films and used for their covers.
We were particularly inspired by the brilliant black & white illustrations of Javi Aznarez (illustrator of “The French Dispatch” film directed by Wes Anderson).
During the work on our project we moved further away from the original style references due to the requirements of the genre and the influence of my own style.

As the holder of the original films copyrights, Michael gave me full freedom to use the originals as I wish. Nevertheless, it was not enough to just copy the reference. In order to create an expressive image, I played with perspective, proportions and negative space. Once I was satisfied with the linear version, I would add textures and shading.
Our focus was to find balance between a recognisable portrait and stylisation, between simplicity and detail.
